A line of artist-inspired supplements for Shadow of the Demon Lord
In most other projects, I commission illustrations to support the text in the product to illustrate places, people, and other elements covered. In Unspeakable Things, the artist illustrates a monster of their own creation and I then build story and mechanics from the image. Not only does this effort give artists the freedom to create whatever disgusting and bizarre monstrosity they can imagine, it challenges me to build a story and mechanics around the illustration.
Creepy Crawlies
Creepy Crawlies joins Praise His Name and other titles in the Unspeakable Things series. Like its predecessors, this entry wraps a story around a monster wholly conceived and created by an artist.
Fear Eaters
This piece was created by my friend Mirco Paganessi. You ought to recognize his work as he’s appeared in a slew of my products and has illustrated the covers for Godless, A Glorious Death, and others as well. Mirco wasn’t messing around with this illustration and it’s glorious.
Layer of Eggs
The incredibly talented Kim Van Deun illustrated a creature from her imagination, and then I created a story around the creature including the mechanics needed to use the thing in the game.
Mother of Destruction
Katerina Ladon turned over a delicious illustration that combines the erotic with the grotesque that natureally brought to mind the succubus. I wrote this supplement to make the monster a manifestation of masculine desire and the ruin that loneliness, alienation, and unanswered appetite can bring.
Praise His Name
wraps words around a stunning piece of art by André Meister. I asked Meister to come up with something on his own, and, after a few sketches and ideas, we settled on this big, bold monstrosity. I wondered what would happen if a devout community went off the deep end. And here, dear reader, is the result of my musings.
That Will Do
Julio Rocha supplied the illustration that inspired this piece. What happens when missionaries of the New God set up in the Folded Lands, offending worshippers of the small gods of the hills? Demon Pigs!
This Unwholesome Thing
This supplement reveals a monster based on a great piece of art created by Jacopo Schiavo. The illustration shows a thing made of two different creatures, with the upper body of a dragon attached to some quadrupedal nightmare. Who could be responsible for such an abomination?
