Uncanny Arcana: Expanding the Magic of Shadow of the Demon Lord

You can find magic just about anywhere in the world described in Shadow of the Demon Lord. The game makes it easy to choose and cast just about any kind of spell imaginable. As of this writing, we’re closing in on the game’s 10-year anniversary. Although I’m committed to not releasing a new edition, I recognize that even this robust magic system could benefit from some tweaks and additions.

That’s where Uncanny Arcana comes in. In the following pages, you’ll find an optional rule for determining your Power score, which makes it more rewarding to pick up magic use at the expert and master tiers. You’ll also find over 160 all-new talents across dozens of traditions of magic. What better way to reward those who explore arcane secrets than with options to give them even more depth and flexibility?

This Poisoned Pages entry references content from Shadow of the Demon Lord, Occult Philosophy, Demon Lord’s Companion, Demon Lord’s Companion 2, and Terrible Beauty.

An Evil Relic for Shadow of the Demon Lord

In the time of Gog’s first invasion, Ashrakal the WitchKing’s followers included many notables—heroes to their allies, wicked, abhorrent villains to their victims. Among this cast of unsavory characters, few stood as high or in as much esteem as Astrophon, for was it not he who slew Parcledian, champion of Edene’s God-Queen? Did he not defeat and humiliate Xanthian, the Breath of the South Wind, in single battle and then eat the elf’s heart in front of his beloved children? Astrophon himself descended into the Underworld and freed thousands before escaping back to the light of the mortal world. He did all these things and more, and the historians of ancient Gog would heap praises on his name, creating from his legend a heroic myth. And yet, people who lived in those times knew better: for all that Astrophon won, all the acclaim he earned, he owed everything to another.

Hide of Astrophon presents an evil relic for use in Shadow of the Demon Lord. The following pages detail the item’s history, its present whereabouts, powers, and more. While useable by itself, the Hide of Astrophon could play an important part in your Return of the Witch-King or Orc Wars campaigns!
